Helping the Next
Generation Get to College

LitNet’s First-Generation College Support Program
Since the fall of 2023, the First-Gen program has offered a variety of programs, primarily delivered in Spanish, to local students and their families. Although the community-wide presentations and workshops have been a great start for our local first-gen community, it became evident that many would benefit from more direct and regular support. This opened the door to the development of more structured mentoring and tutoring programs for LitNet’s first-gen learners
In August of 2024, Deisy Escobar, LitNet’s first teen tutor and active community volunteer, drew together the First-Generation Mentor Council—current first-gen college students who would go on to serve as ambassadors and mentors to local high school students.

Understanding theCollege Application Gap & Challenges Faced byFirst-Gen Students
The average American college applicant has a hidden network of benefits when they begin the college application process. From having family members who have attended college to being born into a culture where going to college is a common topic in the coming-of-age narrative, most young Americans born in the U.S. arrive at college application season already equipped with a general understanding of how college works.
But for those who don’t have anyone in the family who’s gone to college before, or for those who speak another language or whose parents come from a country where the procedures differ dramatically from ours in the U.S., beginning the college application process can be a confounding experience. That was what LitNet’s First-Generation College Coordinator, Deisy Escobar, discovered when she set out to interview local first-gen youth in early 2023. Like her, there were many things they wished they’d known going into the process. This motivated Deisy to join LitNet and head the First-Generation College Support Program.
