January Newsletter 2024

We hope your 2024 is off to a good start!

Ours certainly is. We have 189 active learners and a slate of exciting programming coming. In 2024, while retaining our ongoing one-to-one tutoring programs, we are bringing new energy to what we are thinking of as our “next step” projects. We will be offering more bilingual FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) workshops this year and are pleased to be offering guidance for first-generation, immigrant, and non-native English-speaking college hopefuls working on their essays for college applications. LitNet’s First-Gen Mentor group was launched this month and aims to explore ways they can offer support and mentorship to college hopefuls and their families. We are also researching certificate and internship opportunities for those ready to take the next step toward joining the workforce. We see these new programs as a continuation of our English language and basic education tutoring–whether with the next step or the next generation, we’re here to assist adults and immigrant families in the community achieve their dreams.

In keeping with this theme, our Faces of LitNet column this year will celebrate tutor-learner pairs who have been working together for a year or longer (over 80 pairs!). To learn, and to transform from that learning, does not follow a set path nor last for a slated duration. And once you’ve learned one thing, there’s always the question of “Now what?” This year, we’re hoping to acknowledge learning’s gradual evolution: the way a tutor-learner bond can give a learner not just skills, but confidence and confirmation. How information gives way to discovering a life’s purpose.

Stay tuned for our 2023 Impact Report, which is hot off the presses. We will be sharing it with you in the coming weeks!

Thank you for being on this journey with us.
